Alluvial Soil

Alluvial Soil
- Alluvial soil is the most extensive, widespread, and agriculturally significant soil type in India. Covering approximately 15 lakh square kilometres (about 43% to 45.6% of the country’s total land area), it forms the backbone of India’s agricultural wealth and sustains a major portion of the population.
1. Formation and Composition
- Origin: Formed primarily by the depositional action of sediments transported by rivers, winds, glaciers, and sea waves.
- Nutrients: They are generally rich in potash, lime, and humus, but frequently deficient in nitrogen and phosphorus.
2. Classification:
Alluvial soils are broadly categorized into two major types based on their age, position, and physical characteristics:
A. Bhangar (Older)
- Formation: Situated on higher terraces, lying well above the flood level (about 30 metres above the flood level).
- Composition: Composed of older alluvium, it features a more clayey and sticky composition, is generally dark colored, and is less fertile due to prolonged leaching and weathering.
- Kankar: A few metres below the terrace of the Bhangar lie beds of impure calcium carbonate (lime) nodules locally known as “Kankar”.
B. Khadar (Newer)
- Formation: Composed of newer alluvium, it forms the low-lying floodplains along riverbanks.
- Flooding: These areas are flooded almost every year, depositing a fresh layer of silt with each flood. This continuous renewal makes them the most fertile soils of the Gangetic system.
- Composition: They consist of sandy clays and loams; they are more dry and leached, less calcareous, and contain fewer carbonaceous elements (fewer kankars).

3. Geographical Area
- Major Basins: Extends widely across the Great Northern Plain, stretching from Punjab and Haryana through Uttar Pradesh and Bihar to West Bengal and Assam.
- Peninsular and Coastal Extensions: Found in the lower valleys of the Narmada and Tapti rivers, the eastern coastal deltas (Mahanadi, Godavari, Krishna, and Cauvery), and the northern Gujarat plains via a narrow corridor traversing Rajasthan.
4. Physical Characteristics
- Texture: Ranges widely from sandy loam to heavy clay. The soil texture tends to be more loamy and clayey in the lower Ganga plain and Brahmaputra valley, with the sand content progressively decreasing from west to east.
- Color: Varies from light grey to ash grey, heavily influenced by the depth of deposition, maturity of the soil, and parent material.
5. Major Crops Grown
Due to their high natural fertility, moisture-retention properties, and excellent response to irrigation, alluvial soils support intensive year-round cultivation of:
- Food Grains: Rice (paddy), wheat, maize, and barley.
- Cash Crops: Sugarcane, cotton, jute, and tobacco.
- Others: A wide variety of pulses and oilseeds.

(Alluvial Soil)

(Formation and Composition)
(Classification)
Bhangar – Older)
Khadar – Newer)

(Geographical Area)
(Physical Characteristics)
(Major Crops Grown)
